Things to Consider When You Don't Have a Guest Room

No guest room, no problem. There are many options available to people with limited space that want to host guests. Futons, day beds, Murphy beds, roll-away beds, or floor mattresses are all good options, however, non-guest room options come with extra considerations.
You should always consider age, gender, any physical limitations, and the privacy needs of each guest when you are offering overnight accommodations. It is always a good idea to communicate the sleeping accommodations in your home and confirm that they will be comfortable.
Generally, a private room with a bed will be suitable for most guests. A private room does not necessarily have to be a guest room, it could be an office or den. The space simply needs a door. If you do not have a private room or suitable bed available to your guests, ask yourself if it would be more appropriate to offer them your bedroom?
I am in my late 20’s and am perfectly happy sharing a bed with a friend or sleeping on the couch. Some of my best and oldest friends live across the country, so this allows us to spend as much time together as we can possibly fit in a weekend. Likewise, I could offer my close friends a spot on the sofa or an air mattress if I didn't have space for them in my guest room.
I would not, however, offer my parents or someone ten years older than me the same type of accommodation. If you have a significantly older guest coming to for a visit and you lack a suitable bed or private space for them, proper etiquette is to offer up your bedroom or offer to pay for a hotel room.
Similarly, if you are male and have male roommates, proper etiquette is to give up your bedroom to female guests if you do not have a private room for them to stay in. This becomes even more important if they do not know your male roommates. While this may sound a little antiquated, men be forewarned if your little sister comes to stay, and you don't do this – you are likely to get an earful from your mother.
Even without a guest room, you can make an enjoyable space for guests. Even if all you can offer up is a futon or an air mattress, you can incorporate simple luxuries to make create an exceptional guest space.
